Woolf is digitally organised into colleges on the model of the University of Oxford and the University of London. Digital colleges appear on the Woolf software platform. Colleges consist of groups (free associations) of faculty members with verified doctorates and verified identities. Colleges may admit new faculty members and offer courses linked to their faculty members. Only colleges can enrol students.
Colleges do not normally specialise in any particular topic and may admit students in all those fields represented by the Faculty, Instructor, and Industry Expert of the college.
It is expected that the diversity of colleges will increase over time, both geographically and linguistically.
1. Deans
All colleges have a College Dean, who is the main contact for the college. The College Dean is unanimously elected at the time that the college forms, insofar as the Dean invites at least nine other members (Faculty, Instructor, and Industry Expert) to join the college at formation, and these must approve by the Dean and the other members. Deanships do not have natural term limits, and Deans may not quit, although they may appoint a replacement at any time. The only qualifications required to be a College Dean are those required to be a Faculty, Instructor, and Industry Expert, who is an ordinary faculty member at a college.
2. Academic Board
The Academic Board oversees all academic activities and matters of their respective colleges, including admissions. The board is responsible for ensuring the academic integrity of the curriculum of their college. As such, all courses are taught under the supervision of the board, and all grades are finalized by a member of the board. To be included on the board, members must have a verified MQF level 8 qualification. Each college board must be comprised of at least two members at all times.
3. Faculty
Only faculty members create and lead courses. They are the primary contact for students and conduct the day-to-day proceedings of courses. Faculty members must possess a research doctorate (MQF Level 8) and have a record of research or active research agenda.
4. Instructor
Like faculty members, instructors provide domain-specific academic and industry insights, including teaching during synchronous sessions and provide feedback on student work. Each instructor operates under the supervision of the Academic Board and faculty members. Instructors must be in possession of a graduate degree (MQF Level 7).
5. Industry Expert
Similar to faculty members and instructors, industry experts provide domain-specific academic and industry insights and may also teach during synchronous sessions and provide feedback on student work. Industry experts also operate under the supervision of the Academic Board and faculty members. Industry experts must have at least 5 years of industry-specific professional and/or management experience.
6. Ranking
Colleges are an important component in fostering an environment of academic excellence. Colleges compete with each other for standing in collegiate rankings; rankings are public and depend upon a number of metrics of quality assurance, which are subject to review by the Faculty Council.
7. College Naming Conventions
Academic Colleges of Woolf are normally named after a scholar or someone who has contributed greatly to the arts and sciences, using the following format: [NAME] College.
Colleges should not imply an official relationship to an existing institution, except where so endorsed, nor should they inappropriately suggest royal or state patronage. Colleges are encouraged to support the widest diversity of subjects possible, but colleges choosing to concentrate on a specific field use the following format: [NAME] College of [FIELD], such as ‘Ambrose College of Material Science’.
