Students must receive grades for assignments from either a teacher or college. These grades are used to calculate Running and Final Average Scores.
Grade Weight
A percentage of a final grade that each specific educational material contributes to, which is used in calculating Running Average Score and Final Average Score, is called grade weight.
Graded resources like regular and summative assignments must have grade weights assigned to them - at least one of each kind of assignment per each course. Resources can be associated with one or more grade weights.
- Regular Assignments: Quizzes, essays, status reports, and other assignments.
- Summative Assignments: May consist of a final project, written examination, multiple choice questions, or oral examination. Also applies to the portfolio submissions, long essays, completed dissertations, and theses – typically occurring at the end of a course. Every course requires students to complete at least one summative assignment. It should include or build upon all the learning objectives of the course.
💡Note:
- Grade management in the Grades section is subject to strict rules. The sum of all grade weights must equal 100%. At the same time, these 100% can be distributed in any way.
- There can be regular assignments without grade weight assigned, like homework. All summative assignments must have at least one grade weight attached.
Adjustments to grade weights are restricted if at least one grade has been allocated to it.
How the running average is calculated
💡Note: If a grade weight is set up but no scores are assigned, it won't affect running average.
Here's how to calculate running average:
- For each weight, find the average score and multiply it by the weight.
- Add up all these weighted values and divide by the total of all weights.
Let’s now work with an example
How the final average is calculated
💡Note: If a grade weight is set up but no scores are assigned, it will still affect the final average.
The final average is calculated like the running average, but any unused required grades are considered as 0.
